With the hectic lives we all lead these days, time is precious and every minute that can be spared or saved is so very valuable to us. When it comes to the kitchen, you’ll be amazed at how many genius ideas, or hacks as they are known as, exist. We spoke to Homeware Secrets, a company selling homewares online in Australia and they shared with us 7 life-changing kitchen hacks that you will wish you knew before. You will marvel at how many ways there are to save time, money and space in the room we all spend the most time in in our homes!

  1. Ice Cube Trays Are A Lifesaver

Ice cube trays are not just for boring old frozen water – did you know that there are a myriad of ways in which this simple object can save heaps of time using this simple tool that we all own? From freezing leftover broths and soups into cubes or freezing fresh herbs in olive oil which you can then toss into a quick pasta dish on a rushed Monday evening, ice cube trays are no longer just silly plastic containers that sit in your freezer with the only purpose of cooling your drinks down.

  1. Oil It Up

Have you ever tried to bake a cake or cook a recipe that requires you to measure out sticky ingredients such as maple syrup, honey, peanut butter or tahini? If this is the case, you will know what an absolute headache it is sometimes to stop these ingredients from sticking to your measuring cups. A simple way to prevent this pesky headache is to always coat your measuring cups with non-stick spray before measuring any sticky ingredient out. You will be amazed at how easily your ingredients slide out of your measuring cup, leaving you with less wastage and a lot less cleaning to do after.

  1. Stop Wasting Money On Expensive Lunchbox Ice Packs

This is something that not many know – instead of spending big bucks on lunchbox ice packs, all you need is a sponge! Soak several sponges in water and store each of them in separate ziploc bag, then chuck them into the freezer to freeze till solid. You can throw these little sponge parcels into your lunchbox for a quick, inexpensive and ingenious way of keeping your lunch cool. Furthermore, you can reuse these sponges over and over again, saving you a ton of money in the long run!

  1. Dental Floss Isn’t Just For Your Teeth

Ever had trouble cutting a Cheesecake? Most of the time, we end up butchering a beautiful cheesecake due to improper cutting methods – cake sticks to the knife, or individual pieces end up looking not exactly very appetising. The simple solution to this is to use Dental Floss instead of a knife to cut your cheesecake. Aside from cutting cheesecake, you can also utilise dental floss to cut cake layers into half, and cut bread dough into neat and equal shapes. Who would have guessed!

  1. A Wooden Spoon As A Magic Wand

Sick and tired of water boiling all over and onto your stove when you are boiling pasta or potatoes? The age old trick of placing/balancing a wooden spoon across the top of your pot is the perfect way to stop this from happening ever again. Always remember that only wooden spoons work for this, so don’t bother with fancy metal or silicone spoons. This culinary witchcraft will save you from having to constantly scrub the starchy messes off your stove.

  1. Avoid Avo-Confusions!

Avocados are one of those fruits that are sometimes very hard to gauge in terms of ripeness. They go from unripe to over-ripe in what seems like a matter of hours sometimes. A great way to test if an Avocado is ripe and ready for consumption is to have a peek at the color underneath the Avocado’s stem. If it is yellow or green, it’s good to go. If it is brown, the avocado is most likely already overripe and not the best for consumption as avocados have the tendency to get stringy and unpalatable when overripe.

  1. Clean Out That Microwave

Instead of spending all afternoon scrubbing out your greasy and crusty microwave, our trusty household sponge comes to the rescue once again. Soak a sponge in water and cook it in the microwave for a minute. Always be mindful and careful as the sponge will be too hot to handle with your bare hands. The moisture caused when cooking the sponge will loosen the grit and grime on your microwave, making it ten times easier to clean.

With these 7 life-changing kitchen hacks now stored in your memory, you will never spend an extra minute fumbling around in the kitchen ever again.
