Wish your home was a little more Jetson than Flintstone? Luckily for techies who are also homebodies, there are nearly endless ways to wire up your home and make everything faster, easier and sleeker. At the 2014 midway point, you should have at least one of these futuristic additions in your home; it’s the perfect conversation starter for the next cocktail party or game night.

Not all technology for homes are necessarily costly, and it all depends on what you want and how creative you’d like to get. There’s truly something for everyone and every budget. Why settle for a home life that’s drabber or more work than it needs to be? Check out these seven ways to wire up your home.

1. Transparent TV

Michael Friebe designed this technology masterpiece that’s part TOLED, part LCD. It basically looks like a plain pane of glass but is actually a high-resolution television set full of rich color and contrast. For those who love a great movie night but don’t want a TV to be the focal point of a room, it’s the perfect accessory.

2. AURA Lamp

There are all kinds of cool lamps available, but the AURA creation lights up a room not just with brightness but with texture. Hand-woven in France, it’s that kind of eye catcher that’s still subtle (and plus it’s very utilitarian).

3. 3-D Wall panels

Forget sponging walls with paint or trying to bring back wallpaper like the celebs. A 3-D wall panel is the perfect way to add some contrast to any room and they come in a variety of shapes. Play with shadows and easily change them up without requiring a day’s worth of work. It’s the modern day answer to wallpapering, but with an updated vibe and no glue required.

4. Sony Eclipse

Invented by Hoang Nguyen and Anh Nguyen, this media player taps into photovoltaic cells which are located on the backside to be 100 percent solar powered. You’ll almost never see a low battery warning and it looks stunning on a picture window. Technically, you won’t need to “wire up” this device but it can be charged (just in case).

5. Senzo Nightlight

Tired of depending on your kids’ animal nightlights for those midnight snacks and bathroom runs? Soledad Clavell and Marcos Madia created the Senzi which is a gorgeous light that only brightens when touched. For sensitive sleepers who require pitch blackness, this is the perfect compromise (and it looks much better than the dinosaur one you’ve been using).

6. Eco Cleaner

Tired of getting things from the dishwasher and they’re still sporting food crust? The Eco Cleaner uses ultrasonic waves that ionize particles, quickly turning it into compost which is a tasty treat for your plants. You’ll enjoy minimized waste, healthier plants and a green alternative to dish soap hands.

7. On Switch

Turn is “on” or turn it “off,” but this techie invention goes back to basics. There are no knobs to twist or multiple levers to lower. It looks like it belongs on a spaceship, but knowing simply whether a switch is on or off has never been easier or more elegant.

How do you plan to wire up your home this year? The possibilities are endless.
