Household Survival tips: How to cope with a horrible heat wave

Woman sweatingWe all have been sweating for a week now. Did you know that in Victoria we are now having the worst heat wave in the last century? No wonder that a lot of people don’t know anything about the dangers of this kind of weather.

Last summer we had a couple of days that were equally hot and I had a chance to learn from my aussie friends how to get through them safely. All the things they’ve suggested I tried, they really help and this summer I feel much more confident because I know what to do when it gets really hot.

Renters’ expenses

Movers truck people loading boxesWhen you have just arrived in Australia and started to look for a rental accommodation, to understand what your monthly living expenses will be, you need to know what is included in the rent price. In different countries it works in different ways, so this is a legitimate question to ask - for example, in some countries the council rates are not included in the rent while in other countries they are, etc.

Here is how it works in Australia: the rent price advertised by the estate agents only includes the council rates, and in some cases the water bill. If you’re renting an apartment in a building and there is no separate water meter per apartment, then the landlord will pay the water bill, otherwise the tenant pays for the water.

With all the recession talks not many people think about another possible emergency - apparently there is a growing world-wide water problem.

Home, Mortgage, Landlords and Renters Insurance explained

Home insurance signThere are several kinds of home insurance and I thought to give you a quick run-through to compare and explain them once and for all. It is not uncommon for people to get lost amongst these different forms of insurance, so here they are, demystified.

The most popular forms of home-related insurance are

An interview from Lightening

InterviewThe first time I came across an interview style meme was over at the Lightening (a great blog, check it out), where she answered the questions asked by Frogdancer . I liked this game and decided to join in.

What’s not to like? The questions were provocative, the answers were playful and the whole idea looked brilliant to me. The rules are really simple: you say “I’m in!” and I send you 5 questions to be answered on your blog.

Home insurance - things to know (part 2)

Home damaged by floodContinuing our discussion of home insurance that started in the part one, we’re moving on to people who like to do their own research.

People who don’t mind doing their own homework will need to check the Product Disclosure Statements of all the “candidate” insurance companies. The majority of the companies list a Summary of Insured Events on their websites, which is good - but it doesn’t replace the Product Disclosure Statement.

Home insurance - things to know (part 1)

Insurance policyMy last post was about reasons to insure your future home as soon as the contracts are exchanged. Looking for the insurance that is right for you is not an easy task, but breaking it down into a list of things to consider makes it much easier. In this post I am only talking about a building insurance, there is also a content insurance - but it’s a totally different story.

Insurance companies offer policies that cover damage from explosion, fire, flood, earthquake and tsunami, burst pipes, leaks and overflows. Most of these events can seriously ruin your property and literally leave you with no roof over your head, but some of them are less likely to happen in the area where your house is located.

Exchanged contracts? Get insurance!

House on fireWhen your offer has been accepted and the contracts have been exchanged, it is so tempting to finally relax. You deserve it; you’ve worked hard, searched and found the right house, negotiated a great price and feel kind of proud of yourself and exhausted at the same time.

Sorry, the celebration will have to wait, you still have one more crucial thing to do:

No more New Year’s resolutions!

New Years Resolutions listI could never get those New Year’s resolutions ready for the New Year’s Eve. Preparing for the celebration, buying presents for everybody, planning the dinner, getting together with family and friends make a person busy enough. I was always struggling to plan this one day, December 31st, ahead – not to mention planning my whole year at the last moment.

Any long term decisions (and 365 days are long enough term for me) made in a rush are a bad idea. So I am starting a new tradition – replacing the New Year’s resolutions with New Year’s aspirations. And they must be made up in the New Year, after the countdown, the fireworks and the champagne, when I am sober, my vision isn’t blurring and I can think clearly.

How to productively inspect many properties in one day

House Inspection ChecklistWe all are busy and house-hinting makes our lives even busier. To speed up the house-buying process we have no choice but to inspect several properties in one day. Having done that more than once, I can tell you with confidence: without a schedule you will miss half of the inspections and without making notes you won’t remember anything.

After the third house you inspect, they tend to create a terrible mix in your head and you will have hard time remembering which house had the nice back yard, the one on Elm Street or the one on Oak Avenue.
